CNS student wins prize at Norfolk Young Musician competition
Congratulations to Year 12 student and bassoonist Joanna, who has won the Norfolk & Norwich Chamber Music Prize for most promising young wind player at this year’s Norfolk Young Musician Competition.
Held in Norwich, Norfolk Young Musician is promoted by the Michael Badmington Young Musicians Trust, which provides financial help and support to young string players in Norfolk. Now in its 26th year, 2019’s competition took place on 13th January at the John Innes Centre in Colney, with fourteen contestants taking part.
Entering the competition gives young musicians the opportunity to perform and gain feedback from professional musicians, as well as the chance to scoop a prize. This year’s adjudicator was internationally renowned British viola soloist and professor, Philip Dukes.
Joanna applied after recommendation from her bassoon teacher at Norfolk Music Hub. In her entry, she played Elgar’s Romance for her bassoon and piano performance, and Bourdeau’s Premier Solo for her bassoon recital.
First place in the competition went to 19-year-old flautist Leila Hooton, a former pupil of CNS who is currently studying at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire of Music.

“I didn’t enter to try and win, I just thought that it would be great experience and the chance to get some professional feedback.
“I was very shocked to receive the prize because everyone else played amazingly. I was obviously over the moon with the win!”
