City of Norwich School

Visit from Guildhall musicians

On Friday 24th November, two musicians visited CNS to perform a masterclass in piano and singing to students.

Phoebe Yu is a pianist from Hong Kong and studied a masters degree at the Guildhall school for music and drama. Sian Dicker is a classically trained soprano from Wiltshire, who also studied for a masters degree at the Guildhall.

The two women performed an amazing variety of music from opera, to classical, folk to pop and musical theatre.

Year 7 students attended a performance to the whole year group, where they were encouraged to think about why opera and classical music is used in movies and adverts and taught how to use their breathing and diaphragm muscles to project their singing voices.  The Guildhall musicians performed opera including 'O Mio Babbini Caro' which many Y7s had heard before and identified as being in the 'Mr Bean' movie!

They also listened to Sian perform 'Hello' by the pop singer Adele where she talked about the differences between pop and classical singing, but also the similarities in training your voice.

CNS has a partnership with the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the Norfolk Music Service and students are privileged to hear top musicians perform at the school on a regular basis.
